Key Takeaways from the 2026 Gartner® Hype Cycle for Digital Identity
Gartner published its Hype Cycle™ for Digital Identity on July 6, and 1Kosmos was named a Sample Vendor in three categories: Workforce Identity Impersonation Detection, Verifiable Credentials, and Decentralized Identity.
Before getting into each section, one finding from the Priority Matrix is worth calling out:
“Verifiable Credentials is the only technology in the entire matrix rated Transformational (the highest benefit rating) with a mainstream adoption timeline of less than two years.”
Nothing else in the report sits in that cell. The context and urgency will be more apparent as you read what follows.
Here are the findings from each category that CISOs should be paying attention to, and where 1Kosmos stands on each:
Workforce identity impersonation detection
"Increasing adoption of phishing-resistant multifactor authentication is pushing attackers to seek methods of gaining access that do not require technically sophisticated attacks, such as social engineering."
The downstream consequence of that shift shows up in the processes most organizations have treated as secondary to authentication. Gartner identifies exactly where the exposure sits:
"Conventional service desk verification processes are based on familiarity and gaining the confidence of the agent, and are vulnerable to both conventional social engineering, deepfakes or a combination of the two."
See how CISOs are responding to this threat
Our take
When the authentication layer hardens, attackers find the next weakest link, and that's currently the service/help desk.
Account recovery, password reset, and help desk verification all rely on human judgment rather than cryptographic proof. 1Kosmos extends identity verification into each of those moments, not just at onboarding.
In our view, on the privacy side, Gartner specifically names workforce biometric privacy concerns as a barrier to adoption in this category. Our architecture addresses that directly: all biometrics are hashed and encrypted before storage, the end user controls the private key, and 1Kosmos never has access to raw identity data.
Verifiable credentials
"Verifiable credentials and decentralized identity deserve particular attention as they promise transformational value and are on the Slope of Enlightenment."
On the business case, the report is equally clear:
"VCs enable the digitalization and automation of standardized, secure and compliant data exchange in multiparty business processes at lower cost and higher velocity."
Our take
That Transformational rating carries specific meaning in Gartner's framework: technology that enables new ways of doing business across industries that will result in major shifts in industry dynamics.
The core problem Verifiable Credentials solve is that verified identity today does not travel. Every new system, recovery workflow, and elevated-access request asks the user to prove who they are again from scratch.
1Kosmos unifies identity verification, credential issuance, and passwordless authentication so a verified identity can be issued once and presented cryptographically across every future interaction that requires it. Privacy is built into that model from the start: the user holds the private key, unlocked by their own biometric, and no readable PII is ever stored centrally. That’s what makes reusable credentials viable in practice.
Decentralized identity
"Decentralized identity democratizes digital identity by decentralizing both the storage and the use of identity data."
The resulting improvement over legacy approaches is significant, and Gartner states it plainly:
“DCI, compared with existing approaches, represents magnitudes of improvement in terms of efficiency, cost, privacy, and assurance.”
Our take
It is worth being explicit about how this category and Verifiable Credentials connect. DCI is the infrastructure, and VCs are what travels on top of it. In our view, the value Gartner describes across both sections is two sides of the same architecture.
1Kosmos was built on this model from the start. Our privacy-first architecture means PII is never centralized, no honeypot exists for attackers to target, and users carry cryptographically verifiable proof of identity that they control.
Where legacy approaches store readable PII centrally, our architecture eliminates that risk by design, giving both organizations and the individuals they serve something the current model cannot: genuine ownership of verified identity.
Closing thoughts
The three categories 1Kosmos was named in are not three separate conversations, but one conversation about where the identity landscape is headed, and the Priority Matrix places that conversation closer than most organizations realize.

A separate Gartner® CISO Edge report, Employee Onboarding Is Now Part of the Attack Surface, covers employee onboarding as an attack surface in detail.
It includes a tactical framework for exactly the threat this category describes, and 1Kosmos is named as a Representative Vendor in this report as well.
